Callahan Travis – Four Months Old

Callahan is FOUR months old and holy cow, he’s so dang sweet. Having young kids makes the time fly, we look up and he’s another month old. He still seems so tiny, and it’s crazy to think he’ll be eating solids and on the move very soon!

Growth – He was weighed in late February and was 13lb 2oz and a whopping 25.98 inches long. He’s gained over a pound and grown over an inch in less than a month!

Eats – Breastmilk. Takes a bottle like a champ when I’m at work. We are using Dr Brown’s Standard with a Size 1 nipple, which works really well for us. He recently moved up to 5oz every three hours while I’m away.

Likes – When people make him giggle, snuggles, and watching Big Brother and/or the dog play. They’re very entertaining. Car rides are hit or miss. Baths are his jam. He also love spending time in his bouncer, which is complete opposite from Declan. We have the Baby Bjorn Bouncer with the Toy Bar and we looove it.

Dislikes – When he doesn’t get fed on time. Car rides when he’s tired or hungry. Watch people eat and us not sharing. He’s already tracking as we put food into our mouths and seems very interested already.

Sleep – Oh my! He is sleeping SO well. We have been following Taking Cara Babies, for the most part and it has helped immensely. We purchased her course for 3-4 month olds. He has done a few 12+ hour nights, but is going back and worth between sleeping through and waking a few times due to the developmental leap he’s currently in. Leap 4, if you follow Wonder Weeks.

Life’s Happenings – This month, Callahan landed in the hospital for two nights after getting Periorbital Cellulitis. He went down for a nap and was fine, woke up with a swollen and red eyelid, and we were at the ER of the closest children’s hospital two hours later. He was discharged after 48 hours and 8 doses of IV antibiotics, and sent home with seven days of oral antibiotics. We went to Dove Springs, where he spent almost the entire trip tucked into my jacket. It was COLD. Lastly, we celebrated Papa’s birthday at Hibachi.

Development – He is rolling both ways like a champ and has started trying to sit up anytime he’s reclined, like in his bouncer. He’s begun tracking anything in his line of sight, and looking for whoever is calling his name. Callahan has also starting batting at, and trying to grab toys!

Happy 4 Months, dude. We love you so!

Callahan Travis – Three Months

Our sweet Callahan is THREE months old. Time has flown by and this season of life is a busy one. We are out of the house almost every day for after breakfast until lunch time. Big brother is in swim lessons, gymnastics, and we also attend Stroller Strides!

Growth – Last week at his doctor’s appointment, Callahan was 12lb 1oz, which is in the 15th percentile. His doctor isn’t worried because he’s SO active! He’s 24.8” long, which is in the 86th percentile. Callahan is filling out 3mo pajamas and other one pieces because he’s so long!

Eats – All the breastmilk. I’m back to work and he is getting multiple bottles a week. We’re using the Dr. Brown’s standard neck bottles. Nurses every 2.5-3 hours during the day. We also had Callahan’s oral ties revised just over a month ago. Best decision ever. He is off Zantac and is a completely different baby now! I am dairy free because it makes him spit up more than normal, BUT luckily it doesn’t seem to cause him any pain or discomfort.

Likes – Snuggles, playing with the toys on his bouncer, and smiling.

Dislikes – Being hungry, losing his “bee” (pacifier) when he’s trying to fall asleep, and getting stuck when he’s trying to roll over.

Sleep – Callahan sleeps from 8:30p to 2/3a, feeds, then goes back to sleep until 6a when he wakes to nurse again, then goes back to sleep until 8:30/9a. Takes 3-4 naps a day with 60-90 minute awake period. At night he sleeps in his bassinet next to our bed, and he’s started napping in his crib during the day. Is still swaddled but we will be weaning soon!

Life’s Happenings – Callahan has been a champ at being toted around with a busy big brother. He is super smiley, happy, and social; but still prefers mom and dad for snuggles and when he’s tired.

Development – Callahan has started rolling both ways, and his head control is insane! Our pediatrician said he’s at a 4-5mo level. He is so observant, too – and loves watching Declan play or me cook. He’s a huge fan of routine, especially surrounding his bedtime.

Happy 3 Months, Buddy! We love you so.

Callahan Travis: A Birth Story

On November 12, 2018 I was 39 weeks and 4 days pregnant and headed to my OB for a routine appointment. My mom came with me to watch Declan and “just in case”, since I have a history of developing pre-eclampsia in the final weeks of my pregnancies. That’s what lead to my induction with Declan just over two years prior, and that’s what lead to my mom’s induction with me…

The nurse checks my blood pressure twice “just to double check”, so I asked her what it was. I don’t remember the exact numbers but she told me the first time she checked it, the diastolic number (the one on the bottom) was 101, and the second time she took it, the diastolic number was 99. If you pay a lick of attention when you go to the doctor, you’d know that’s way too high. Anything over 140/90 during pregnancy is cause for concern. They check me – I’m 4cm dilated. Awesome! This is great. We’re having a baby today! I called Josh and told him to leave work, it was go time!

By the time we made to over to Labor and Delivery and got fluids hooked up, it was 1:50p. I had horrible veins, again. So typical of me and my babies’ birth days! Then they started Pitocin at 3:50p. I fully intended to also have a pain medication free birth this time around, but even our best laid plans can change. Within a few hours I was having both regular contractions in the front of my belly, as well as back labor. I was rolling on the yoga ball and trying to ride the waves, but with each contraction the pain became more and more unbearable. After asking for more details from our nurse, and discussing it with Joshua privately, I made the informed decision to get an epidural. My line was placed at 8:45p.

I was finally able to rest, and I progressed quickly after that. I progressed from 5cm dilated at 5p to fully dilated around 11:00p. I told our nurse that I wanted to labor down for a while so that I wouldn’t have to push very long. With Declan I pushed for four contractions, and I wanted that same experience again this time. She called my OB and he made his way over. After only four pushes, our second son Callahan Travis was born at 11:28p. He was 7 pounds 9 ounces, and 20.5″ long.

Welcome to the world, sweet boy!
